Special Guests

In addition to photography and meditation, I like to integrate other mindful practices to enhance overall well-being. I invite leaders, practitioners, and experts to share their wisdom and experience with us- such as other photographers, meditation teachers, and breathwork practitioners. Expect a few delightful surprises along the way!

Hi there! My name is Kristopher Grunert. I’ve always been aware that my photographs have a meditative quality to them but it wasn’t until I started a daily conscious breathing practice that I realized I had been meditating without meditating for the last 25 years. Since then, I’ve further deciphered my process and developed the framework for PM.

This journey has not only enriched my artistic pursuits, but has profoundly impacted my role as a father to Luke and a partner to my wonderful wife, Mar. Through PM, I've learned to be more present, more attuned, and more empathetic. Now, I'm eager to share this incredible journey of self-discovery and transformation with you. Together, we'll uncover the boundless potential that lies within each of us.

My mission is to empower people to become creators while connecting with themselves and their surroundings to promote mindfulness as a means of personal growth and increase overall human potential.

Course Curriculum

On the other side of this program, you will have realized how to use photography to shift from a negative frame of mind to a positive mindset instantly. Presence, awareness, and gratitude will become second nature to you. You'll melt away any anxiety or mental noise by slowing down and becoming present. With a diverse group of like-hearted folks from around the globe, we will keep each other accountable while turning new knowledge into daily habits. These habits will lead to further joy, fulfillment, and purpose. Whether or not you consider yourself an artist, by the end of the program, you will have a body of artwork that you will be proud of and cherish forever.

Week 1

Explore without Expectation

Identify as a creator who explores only for the experience of exploring. We replace the binary concept of expectation (success or failure) with the unlimited possibilities of intention. The journey is the goal.

Week 2

Observe with Curiosity

Engage the world with curiosity, seeing it with fresh eyes, accessing wonder and awe. We gain a new perspective through the power of asking questions and learn to answer them with our camera.

Week 3

Employ All 5 Senses

Consciously engage each of our senses by asking ourselves five simple questions. What do I smell? What do I hear? What do I feel? What do I taste? What do I see? These questions heighten our awareness of our body and environment while drawing us to and rooting us into the present moment long enough to feel the positive effects of endorphins released in our bodies.

Week 4

Revere Light / Acknowledge Shadow

Start to notice and see the light. Acknowledge the beauty of its different characteristics. By building awareness around light and shadow, we start to relate to them. When we see the beauty and depth in both light and shadow, we naturally integrate them into our being.

Week 5

Enter the Zone / Go with the Flow

We recognize the camera as an extension of you and light as energy. Visualizing your camera capturing that energy transports us into a meditative state. With the combination of 4 previous tenets, we feel fully connected to our bodies and the world around us. We feel elated with wonder, awe, and a connection to something infinitely larger than we previously associated with ourselves.

Week 6

Give Thanks

You will inevitably feel gratitude. We acknowledge the appreciation and get clear about what we are grateful for. This is what locks the experience into our bodies and inspires these feelings to surface in other areas or moments of our life.

Testimony

I love everything about the Photography as Meditation course and the way photographer Kristopher Grunert approaches art and wellness. A grounded and inspirational artist, I discovered Kris is also a passionate guide and mentor. With openness and encouragement, Kris thoughtfully generates an enjoyable group process into the creativity of photography, awareness and meditation. Exploring ways I can incorporate the principles of photography as meditation into my daily life was a valuable experience that I continue to practice and benefit from. Genuinely one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I hadn’t taken a photography class since high school. Photography as Meditation struck me as an opportunity to get in touch with “who I am being” while taking photographs, rather than solely focusing on the subject. I now have a new perspective on viewing photo subjects. We are in conversation. I listen with my heart. The photographs I took during class felt different. I feel different. Now, even when I don’t have my camera (my phone) with me, I am more present to all that surrounds me.

I had a wonderful time learning in the Photography as Mediation course with Kristopher last fall. Kristopher’s extensive knowledge of photography and warm personality made the course very enjoyable. Although I have been interested in photography for some time, Kristopher’s guidance helped me be more present, let go of expectations, cultivate curiosity, and feel more connected, especially to nature.  It is a great opportunity to expand creativity and adapt meditation skills that make photography more enjoyable. I highly recommend participating in Photography as Meditation course.

A Journey of Mindfulness and Visual Exploration

In the pursuit of inner peace and self-awareness, the practice of meditation has long been a guiding light for individuals seeking to cultivate a calm and focused mind. Traditionally, meditation has been associated with closed eyes, as it allows practitioners to turn their attention inward and detach from external distractions. However, an alternative approach known as eyes open meditation has gained recognition for its unique benefits and the potential for deeper integration into daily life. But what happens when we integrate the practice of photography into these meditative journeys? How does the camera amplify our experience and open portals to new realms of self-discovery and visual exploration?

Photography as Meditation is a transformative practice that encourages us to bring mindfulness into our everyday moments and integrate them into all aspects of our lives. Suddenly, our journey becomes infused with visual exploration—a means of capturing and immortalizing the essence of our experience. As we capture moments with our camera, we capture fragments of our own story. Each photograph becomes a reflection of our unique perspective, encapsulating our emotions, memories, and the essence of our lived experiences. Through this process, we not only deepen our understanding of ourselves but also create a visual narrative that speaks to others.

As we embark on this dual journey of walking meditation and photography, we realize that the path itself becomes a metaphor for life—a metaphor for our personal journey from point A to point B. We have clarity about our starting point, where we stand at this moment, and we may have a destination in mind—an envisioned point B. But within the realm of mindfulness and photography, there is a beautiful paradox. We discover that our true destination is not a fixed point, but rather an ever-shifting and expanding possibility—point X.

Point X represents the unexpected treasures we encounter along the way—the moments of awe and wonder, the connections forged, the insights gained, and the personal growth experienced. It is a realm of infinite possibilities, where our journey becomes a portal into the depths of self-discovery and creative expression. The integration of walking meditation and photography invites us to step into this realm, embracing the uncertainty and embracing the magic of the unknown.

In this integration of walking meditation and photography, we find ourselves fully present, attuned to the rhythm of our breath, the sensations of our bodies and the unfolding moments of our surroundings. We become keen observers, not only of the external world but also of the thoughts, emotions, and sensations that arise within us. The act of capturing a photograph becomes a mindful pause—an invitation to pause, breathe, and truly see.

Through photography, we learn to cultivate a deep sense of gratitude for the present moment. As we frame the beauty around us, we shift our focus from expectations and judgments to a profound appreciation for the intricacies of life. We become attuned to the interplay of light and shadow, recognizing that both are essential for creating depth and contrast. Similarly, we begin to acknowledge the interplay of our own light and shadow—the aspects of ourselves that we embrace and those we often shy away from.

Just as photography captures the interplay of light and shadow, it becomes a mirror reflecting our own journey of self-acceptance and self-discovery. As renowned Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung once said, "Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of others." Through the lens of photography, we learn to embrace shadows, acknowledging their presence without judgment. We recognize that within the realm of creativity and self-expression, our shadows can become powerful sources of inspiration and growth.

Our mindful photography practice becomes an invitation to engage with the world in a deeper, more meaningful way. As we traverse the physical landscape, we also navigate the landscapes of culture, society, and nature. We become mindful stewards of our environment, cultivating a sense of responsibility and reverence for the interconnectedness of all things.

So, let us embark on this multidimensional journey with open hearts and curious minds. Let us walk with intention, photograph with presence, and embrace the quantum possibilities that lie before us. Through the integration of walking meditation, eyes open meditation, and photography, we open portals to new realms of self-discovery, visual exploration, and personal growth. We become the creators of our own unique tapestry, weaving together the threads of mindfulness, movement, and visual expression. And in doing so, we uncover the infinite beauty and wisdom that resides within and around us. Our footsteps become a rhythmic dance, synchronizing with the pulse of life itself. With each click of the shutter, we capture not only images but fragments of our own essence—moments frozen in time, representing our unique perspective and the depths of our emotions.
